Let America Vote Announces 2018 Policy Priorities

Let America Vote today announced its policy priorities for the 2018 state legislative sessions. While continuing to fight back against voter suppression efforts, Let America Vote will support policies that expand access to voting rights.

Specifically, Let America Vote supports legislation to expand opportunities for people to register to vote, to restore voting rights for people with felony convictions and to increase opportunities for early voting.

“We have to keep fighting back against the politicians who are trying to limit voting rights, but if we’re going to win this fight, we need to support the good work being done by voting rights champions,” said Jason Kander, president of Let America Vote. “We can make elections simpler and more secure through automatic voter registration. We can also expand voting rights by re-enfranchising people with felony convictions who have served their time, and expand early voting opportunities to everyone. Voting in this country is a right–not a privilege for certain Americans. As state legislative sessions progress, Let America Vote will highlight and support the work done by public servants who are protecting and expanding voting rights.”

Te expand opportunities for voter registration, Let America Vote supports automatic voter registration and same-day voter registration policies. To implement automatic voter registration, Let America Vote supports policies like Nevada’s Question 5 ballot initiative, which would use Department of Motor Vehicle locations to register voters automatically. Let America Vote also supports Tennessee’s HB 1556, a bill that would allow voters to register on Election Day.

Let America Vote also supports re-enfranchising otherwise eligible voters who have felony convictions, which would be accomplished by Florida’s Amendment 4 ballot initiative.

Finally, bills that increase early voting opportunities like those created by Virginia’s SB 114, which would implement no-excuse absentee voting, are a priority for Let America Vote.

To enact its policy agenda, Let America Vote will monitor and build support for legislation that would advance voting rights across the country.
