Georgia wins GOTV door-knocking competition as Let America Vote surpasses 640,000 attempted voter contacts in 2018

Kansas City, MO — Let America Vote has surpassed 640,000 attempted voter contacts for 2018, underscoring the voting-rights organization’s commitment to supporting candidates up and down the ballot who will defend and advance eligible Americans’ access to the ballot box.

“Two-thirds of a million attempted voter contacts is a huge milestone for our organization and a testament to the passion and perseverance of our interns and volunteers,” LAV Executive Director Suzy Smith said. “But it’s also just that — a milestone on our way to Nov. 6 and electing voting-rights champions from Nevada to New Hampshire.”

The 640,000 figure encompasses contacts made on the doors, via phone calls and through one-on-one texting — including more than 260,000 doors knocked.

The milestone comes just days after Let America Vote’s fall GOTV door-knocking competition, in which volunteers and interns in LAV’s five states competed through the weekend to reach the most voters. Georgia surged to victory in the competition, amassing 21,324 direct voter contact points to overcome next-best New Hampshire.

LAV’s all-out effort in Georgia comes as the contest for governor there has emerged as a must-watch race nationally in 2018, and a key battleground for voting rights. Let America Vote has endorsed Stacey Abrams, a proven voting-rights champion, in her race against Brian Kemp, a known vote suppressor who has used his position as secretary of state to disenfranchise eligible voters and shrink the electorate.

“Winning this friendly competition was nice, but the real victory for LAV-Georgia is going to be electing Stacey Abrams as governor,” LAV-Georgia State Director Porsha White said. “Brian Kemp and his enablers are using Jim Crow tactics to suppress eligible voters and steal this election. We’re going to knock every door we can to stop them.”

Let America Vote has offices in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and Tennessee in 2018, and is supporting dozens of candidates for legislative and statewide office.

The metrics validate Let America Vote’s unique approach as the pioneer organization with the exclusive mission of fighting and winning the political argument against voter suppression. While LAV advances voting-rights policy, promotes voter registration and engages in paid-media messaging, the vast majority of its efforts are devoted to a grassroots field program on behalf of legislative and statewide candidates.

Let America Vote’s GOTV Door-Knocking Competition attracted dozens of volunteers in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and Tennessee who targeted key legislative districts to support voting-rights champions on the 2018 ballot and create political consequences for vote-suppressing politicians.

LAV’s door-knocking teams were cheered on by celebrity captains Dulé Hill, Misha Collins and Kelly McCreary.

Let America Vote volunteers will continue knocking doors and contacting voters in support for voting rights champions through Election Day.
