Kansas City, MO — In response to voting procedure changes made in the Kansas 4th Congressional District special election that would suppress voting, Let America Vote President Jason Kander today sent a letter urging Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman to reverse the changes and use regular, fair election administration practices.

The changes proposed for the special election include shutting down early voting sites, reducing the number of Advanced Voting Applications sent to voters and changing the location of eight polling places for this election only.

“Changing voting procedures for one election causes confusion and reduces voter turnout,” Kander said. “Local Election Authorities should make it as easy as possible for eligible voters to cast their ballot, and changing the rules throughout the year only makes it more difficult. Sedgwick County should reconsider these changes and allow voters of the 4th Congressional District to vote as they usually do.”

Let America Vote’s full letter can be found here.

Additionally, the organization sent a Kansas Open Records Act request to Secretary of State Kris Kobach to determine his office’s role in these decisions. The request can be found here.

Let America Vote launched in February 2017 to fight back against proposals across the country that make it harder for eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right to cast a ballot. Whether it’s extreme identification requirements, questionable purges of voter rolls, voter intimidation, new and extreme voter registration processes, or anything that makes voting harder, Let America Vote will be there to lead the way against it. Its president is Jason Kander, the former Missouri Secretary of State.
