Jason Kander, Rep. Terri Sewell Respond to Report Proving Sec. Kobach’s Efforts to Make Voter Suppression into Federal Law

Jason Kander and Congresswoman Terri Sewell released the following statements after a federal judge unsealed documents proving that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach lobbied President Trump to expand voter suppression policies across America:

“Secretary Kobach is the number one opponent of voting rights in our country, and President Trump chose him to lead a commission that is supposed to be about election integrity,” Jason Kander said. “From day one of the commission’s work, Secretary Kobach has said there are no presupposed policy solutions that the commission would pursue. But now we know that Secretary Kobach has been lying. He has been trying to implement the same laws that have disenfranchised a multitude of Kansas voters to all eligible American voters. This is just more proof that the commission’s leadership is dishonest, that it aims to roll back the progress we’ve made on voting rights and and that the commission should be disbanded.”

“Kris Kobach’s proposals for federal voter suppression laws should be alarming for any American who values the integrity of our democracy and believes in the sanctity of our right to vote,” Rep. Terri Sewell said. “I come from Selma, Alabama, where so many fought, bled, and died for their right to vote. Now Kris Kobach and President Trump’s sham voting commission are threating to turn back the clock by stripping down voter registration laws that have protected access to the polls for decades. We cannot allow this Administration to silence the voice of eligible voters.”
