Let America Vote Demands Answers from Indiana Secretary of State Regarding Voter Purge

Let America Vote today called on Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson to further explain the process by which her office purged nearly half a million voters from Indiana’s voter rolls. Secretary Lawson announced yesterday that she has canceled 481,235 voter registrations since the November election.

In an open records request, Let America Vote asked Secretary Lawson for documents relating to the process her office used to cancel the voter registrations and who the office communicated with during the process. We are also seeking a list of the voters whose registrations were canceled to ensure no voters improperly lost the ability to vote in Indiana.

“Secretary Lawson canceled the registrations of about 10 percent of the voters in her state, so questions should certainly be asked about her process,” said Jason Kander, President of Let America Vote. “Obviously states should have the most accurate voter lists possible, but that process should be fair and done carefully so not a single eligible voter improperly loses the ability to vote. Instead of allowing local election authorities to do their jobs and administer their voter lists as they have in the past, Secretary Lawson unilaterally took this action on her own. Today we are asking important questions of Secretary Lawson to help ensure her process didn’t disenfranchise anyone in her state.”
