North Carolina Democrats Introduce Bill to Advance Voting Rights

North Carolina Senate Democrats today introduced a bill that would strengthen voting rights in a state where people of color and low income voters have historically had their voting rights suppressed. Following the introduction of Senate Bill 704, Let America Vote President Jason Kander released the following statement:

“North Carolina has the opportunity to lead the effort in 2018 to expand voting rights and improve election security with Senate Bill 704. If passed, SB 704 would streamline the voter registration process for all eligible North Carolinians and help keep voter data as up-to-date as possible. This bill would help to right the wrongs against African Americans and other marginalized North Carolinians who have seen their voting power diluted by politicians for decades. Voters in North Carolina should contact their legislators and tell them to stand up for voting rights and support this bill.”

SB 704 would implement universal voter registration by automatically enrolling eligible voters at DMV offices, public assistance agencies and higher education institutions. The bill would also require the State Board of Elections to educate North Carolinians on the changes and their ability to opt out.
