Nebraska Lawmaker Introduces Voter Suppression Bills

Nebraska State Senator and Let America Vote’s Voter Suppression Hall of Shame member John Murante today introduced bills that would limit voting rights in Nebraska and increase the chances of eligible voters being purged from the state’s voter file.

“Senator Murante’s bills would cost taxpayers money and add more bureaucracy to elections,” said Jason Kander, President of Let America Vote.“Voter ID bills have been defeated in Nebraska multiple times on a bipartisan basis because lawmakers know that the cost is too high and the benefit is nonexistent. Senator Murante wants a promotion to statewide office after working to restrict the voting rights of his constituents by filing these un-American bills. That’s wrong, and he should be held accountable.”

In addition to the voter ID bill, Senator Murante proposed voter suppression bills that would weaken provisional ballots and force county election officials to use a database that could lead to the removal of eligible voters who legally voted for years from state voter files.
