Let America Vote Statement on SCOTUS Ohio Voter Purges Case

Following oral arguments today in the Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute Supreme Court case, Let America Vote President Jason Kander released the following statement:

“The right to vote is a fundamental part of our democratic system–not a ‘use it or lose it’ privilege. You shouldn’t be taken off the voting rolls as a punishment for not voting. Good state election officials maintain their voter rolls with extreme care and without stripping voting rights from eligible Americans. Making up excuses to take people off the rolls is an un-American attack on our democracy.

“The legal fight to protect against politically-motivated voter roll purges is crucial to protecting voting rights, and I am hopeful that supporters of democracy win this case. But regardless of the outcome, we have to make sure that politicians who suppress voting in any way face political consequences for it. Let America Vote is holding politicians accountable across the country, making sure they know that if they make it harder to vote, we’re coming for their jobs.”
