Let America Vote Denounces Georgia Republicans’ Efforts to Limit Voting

Fearing that strong Democratic turnout could result in some Republican lawmakers losing their seats in the 2018 elections, Republican state senators in Georgia are trying to limit opportunities for voters to participate in elections this November. Republicans have introduced SB 309 and SB 363, two bills that would reduce early voting opportunities and cut voting hours on Election Day exclusively in the city of Atlanta.

“These actions by Republicans are totally transparent: they want to give a specific group of folks fewer chances to vote because of who they’re likely to vote for,” said Jason Kander, president of Let America Vote. “Republican lawmakers know that Democrats have a strong chance to win back the governor’s mansion and make gains in the legislature this November, and their solution is to keep Democrats from the polls. These bills would disproportionately impact Georgia’s largest city, which is home to more Democratic voters and people of color than anywhere else in the state.

“If Republicans want to change the law to make voting hours across the state uniform, then they should require all polls to stay open until 8:00 p.m. instead of cutting Atlanta’s voting opportunities by an hour. And if they continue trying to limit voting rights to gain an advantage in elections, we’re going to help their opponents win in November.”

Let America Vote is helping connect Georgians to their state legislators with a texting tool. By texting VOTE GA to 44939, Georgia residents will be connected by Let America Vote to their state representatives to speak out against SB 309 and SB 363.

Let America Vote’s Georgia office will open in Spring 2018 to help elect voting rights champions and defeat politicians who are trying to roll back voting rights in Georgia.
