Let America Vote Statement on SCOTUS Nomination

Following President Trump’s announcement that he will nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy left by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, Let America Vote President Jason Kander made the following statement:

“When the news broke that President Trump would have the opportunity to nominate a new Supreme Court Justice, every believer in free and fair elections knew that the fight to protect voting rights would become much more difficult and much more important. Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination offers no hope that the Supreme Court might change course and stand up to anti-democratic voter suppression; if anything, it will embolden Republicans to continue suppressing their way to electoral success.

“It’s no surprise that Judge Kavanaugh’s philosophy is hostile to voting rights. President Trump has made perfectly clear his intent to suppress the vote to get himself and his GOP colleagues re-elected. But this announcement should be a rallying cry for every American who believes that our democracy is stronger when more eligible voters get the chance to cast a ballot.

“I started Let America Vote to expand the fight for voting rights beyond the court of law and into the court of public opinion. Now more than ever, it is essential that we create political consequences for politicians who believe in suppressing the vote. If Republican politicians make it harder to vote, we’re going to make sure it’s harder for them to get re-elected.”
